Day  17 : Tehran

This is a traditional Irananian gymnasium that literally translates into “house of strength”.  No one will dispute this once you witness members grappling with huge wooden shield like boards.

These types of gymnasiums are not as common any longer but a few are still found in the neighbourhoods of Tehran and elsewhere. We spent an afternoon trying to find the location, taking us to narrow alleys with curious residents looking on. Once we finally arrived, we were invited to sit along the sides to watch members train.  The first session had started where a group was warming up in the octagonal pit, while another was busy with some weight training exercises. Some wielding huge wooden clubs and others chanting some phrases while holding up huge wooden boards.

You may be picturing a room filled with surly faced testosterone bravados but they were nothing like that. Instead a kind friendly acknowledgement was offered for our unannounced visit and the customary serving of tea!

As more members arrived, of all ages, the same series of exercises where followed. One immediately get a sense that this was more than a strong man’s gym but also a place where long lasting friendships were made.

Their ethically training at these institutions is that to be a strong man, you have to be pure, truthful and good tempered.

Reminding each other by reciting this verse at their meetings
“Learn modesty, if you desire knowledge. A highland would never be irrigated by a river.” (Kanz ol-Haghayegh)
