Day 21 – Meghri to Yerevan

We found a quaint homestay nestled in the mountain side village of Meghri for our first night in Armenia. It was dark when we arrived and the lighting along the roads were low so we could see very little of where we were but the uncertainty was soon dispelled. The next morning we were woken by the sound of roosters crowing. It was such a joy watching the sun light up the mountain side, unveiling this peaceful village. This was characteristic of the Armenian countryside in the south. Bold dramatic mountains dotted with villages along the rivers.  Our journey a mere 365 km would take us 7 hours to reach Yerevan the capital! As the southern half of Armenia is made up by the Zangezur Mountains. A majestic mountain range with deep gorges and mostly covered by trees. These mountains presented us with spectacular views as the road wound it’s way round the steep inclines as we made our way north. Each dip and raise promised to reveal another breath taking view. Or just breathless due to a 12 wheeler whizzing through the same hairpin bends!
