The First Christian State

Day 22 – 25 – Yerevan

Armenia became the first state in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion and the countless monasteries dotted along the country side stands testament to this claim. Beautiful ancient buildings mostly perched on top of an an outcrop and requiring one to climb countless steps!

The capital Yerevan located in the north is a beautiful, clean and green city. Characterised by large red brick apartment blocks reminiscent of a more recent Soviet past. Boasting wide roads making driving such a pleasure. The city is the best place to stay with most sights in walking distance. It also has green spaces dotted through out for the times when you just need to take a break. (We had many of those 😉 )
Very little English is spoken in Armenia with signs and information presented in Armenian or Russian! At this time we struggled along with sign language and used Google to direct us where possible! Halal food options were scarce but we did manage to find one restaurant that we frequented daily 😉

Our journey further north took us to Lake Sevan the largest fresh water water body in the Causus region. Also used for leisure activity and a great place to get away from the heat of the city. Little did we know how much we would be missing that heat in the dark hours of the night when temperatures would drop significantly 😉 more on that later.

But the lake was only a pit stop for our journey further north to Georgia.
