She-raz

Days 10-12 : Shiraz

Iranians speak in a melodic fashion and the correct way to pronounce Shiraz would be to say She-raz.  It is better known as a place of pilgrimage to the shrine of the brothers Ahmad and Muhammad (brothers to 8th Imam Ali Al-Rida) and the resting place for the poet Hafez. Main roads in the city are lined with orange trees, what a treat this must be during the winter months (note to self, next visit to Shiraz should be in the winter 😉 ) Age old buildings housing the town’s bazaars, is still in operation, likely from a time before the days of Marco Polo. The spice bazaar, my favourite part, filled with exotic spices is where merchants still peddle their fragrant wares. While the fabric, clothing and shoes are modern day styles, one can still sense the excitement of trade in the age old covered alleys.

Our stay was in a part of the city where trendy new restaurants and coffee shops are the new ‘in’ places to hang out in for young Iranians. While tea is the preferred beverage in all of Iran, coffee shops serving cappuccinos, hanging out with your friends, listening to contemporary music and sharing their own Iranian rhapsodies seem to be the order of the day. Look out for the area around Ferdosi and Roodaki streets and you will definitely find a lively hangout.
